Medium Provisional key

Which of the following statements with regard to India’s indigenous new high resolution weather model, the ‘Bharat Forecast System,’ is/are correct?

  1. 1.Its objective is to generate forecasts at the Panchayats cluster level.
  2. 2.It was developed by IIT Delhi.

Select the answer using the code given below:

Answer & explanation

Answer: (a) 1 only

The Bharat Forecast System (BharatFS) runs at 6 km resolution, fine enough to give forecasts at the panchayat or cluster-of-panchayats level, so Statement 1 is correct. It was developed by scientists at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM), Pune, under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, not by IIT Delhi.

  • ✓ 1. The Ministry of Earth Sciences says BharatFS operates at 6 km resolution (against 12 km earlier) and would help provide monsoon rainfall forecasts at the panchayat or cluster-of-panchayats level.
  • ✗ 2. The model's grid structure and development were carried out by scientists at the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, Pune, not IIT Delhi.

Remember · BharatFS: MoES model built at IITM Pune, 6 km resolution (earlier global model 12 km), aimed at block and panchayat-level forecasts; operational since May 2025.
