Ships from which of the following countries have to cross the Strait of Hormuz to reach out to the Indian Ocean?

  1. 1.Bahrain
  2. 2.Syria
  3. 3.Qatar
  4. 4.Egypt

Select the answer using the code given below:

Answer & explanation

Answer: (b) 1 and 3

The Strait of Hormuz, between Iran and Oman, is the only sea exit from the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea. Bahrain and Qatar have coasts only on the Persian Gulf, so their ships must pass through it. Syria and Egypt lie on the Mediterranean (and Egypt also on the Red Sea), so they reach the Indian Ocean via Suez and Bab-el-Mandeb instead.

  • ✓ 1. Bahrain is an island state inside the Persian Gulf, so every voyage to the Indian Ocean passes through Hormuz.
  • ✗ 2. Syria's coast is on the Mediterranean; its ships reach the Indian Ocean through the Suez Canal and the Red Sea.
  • ✓ 3. Qatar is a peninsula on the western shore of the Persian Gulf; its LNG and oil exports leave through Hormuz.
  • ✗ 4. Egypt has Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts, so its ships sail down the Red Sea and out through Bab-el-Mandeb.

Remember · Persian Gulf states needing Hormuz: Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar (plus most of Saudi, UAE and Iranian ports). Red Sea exit = Bab-el-Mandeb.

Tungurahua Volcano, which was declared a Global Geopark by UNESCO in 2025, is situated in which one among the following countries?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (a) Ecuador

Tungurahua is an active stratovolcano in the Ecuadorian Andes, near the town of Baños. UNESCO designated the Tungurahua Volcano UNESCO Global Geopark, covering about 239,700 hectares, in 2025, with Ecuador as the country.

  • ✓ (a) UNESCO lists the geopark as located in the Ecuadorian Andes, designated in 2025, country Ecuador.
  • ✗ (b) Peru's volcanic landmarks such as Misti and Sabancaya lie in the southern Andes; Tungurahua is not among them.
  • ✗ (d) Colombia's active volcanoes include Nevado del Ruiz and Galeras; Tungurahua lies south of the border, in central Ecuador.

Which of the following statements with reference to Lake Turkana is/are correct?

  1. 1.It is the largest desert lake in the world.
  2. 2.The lake is situated in South Sudan along the eastern fringe of the Sahara desert.
  3. 3.The lake is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is also referred to as the ‘Jade Sea’.

Select the answer using the code given below:

Answer & explanation

Answer: (b) 1 and 3 only

Lake Turkana is the world's largest desert lake and a UNESCO World Heritage property nicknamed the Jade Sea for its colour. It lies in the Rift Valley of northern Kenya, reaching up to the Ethiopian border, not in South Sudan.

  • ✓ 1. UNESCO describes Lake Turkana as the largest desert lake in the world and the most saline lake in East Africa.
  • ✗ 2. The lake is in Kenya, in the Rift Valley, and extends north to the Ethiopian border. South Sudan is not involved, and it is not a Sahara-fringe lake.
  • ✓ 3. Lake Turkana National Parks, in Kenya, were inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1997. UNESCO notes the lake is fondly called the Jade Sea because of its colour.

Remember · Lake Turkana (Kenya, Rift Valley, to the Ethiopian border): largest desert lake in the world; Lake Turkana National Parks inscribed by UNESCO in 1997; called the Jade Sea.

Consider the following statements about river bridges connecting India with neighbouring countries:

  1. 1.‘Maitri Setu’, built over Feni river, connects Ramgarh in India with Sabroom in Bangladesh.
  2. 2.Jhulaghat suspension bridge connects India with Myanmar.
  3. 3.Mechi bridge and its approaches connect Panitanki Bypass in India with Kakarvitta in Nepal.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (d) 3 only

Only statement 3 is right. Maitri Setu joins Sabroom in Tripura (India) with Ramgarh (Bangladesh), the reverse of what statement 1 says. The Jhulaghat bridge on the Kali river leads into Nepal, not Myanmar.

  • ✗ 1. Sabroom lies in South Tripura, India, and Ramgarh is on the Bangladesh side; the statement swaps the two countries.
  • ✗ 2. Jhulaghat is a town on the Indo-Nepal border named after a hanging bridge on the Kali river, through which one enters Nepal.
  • ✓ 3. The Mechi bridge is part of the upgraded Kakarvitta (Nepal) to Panitanki Bypass (India) road on NH 327B, and is the end point of Asian Highway 02 in India.

Remember · Maitri Setu: Sabroom (Tripura, India) – Ramgarh (Bangladesh) over the Feni. Jhulaghat (Pithoragarh) and the Mechi bridge (Panitanki–Kakarvitta) both lead into Nepal.

  2. II.Brazil
  3. III.Colombia
  4. IV.Ecuador
  5. V.Paraguay
  6. VI.Venezuela

Andes mountains pass through how many of the above countries?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (c) Only four

The Andes run along South America's western side through seven countries: Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. From the list, Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Venezuela lie on the chain; Brazil and Paraguay lie wholly to the east.

  • ✓ I Bolivia is one of the countries with large portions of the Tropical Andes.
  • ✗ II Brazil is not one of the Andean countries; it lies east of the chain, in the Amazon basin and the Brazilian Highlands.
  • ✓ III Colombia includes large portions of the Tropical Andes; the northern Andes split into several ranges (cordilleras) there.
  • ✓ IV Ecuador includes large portions of the Tropical Andes; its Andean cordilleras carry volcanoes such as Chimborazo and Cotopaxi.
  • ✗ V Paraguay is a landlocked lowland country of the Paraná–Paraguay basin and the Gran Chaco, with no Andean ranges.
  • ✓ VI The Andes hotspot extends from western Venezuela, where the northernmost Andes (the Venezuelan or Caribbean cordillera) lie.

Consider the following water bodies:

  1. I.Lake Tanganyika
  2. II.Lake Tonlé Sap
  3. III.Patos Lagoon

Through how many of them does the equator pass?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (d) None

UPSC's key is none. Tonlé Sap, in Cambodia, lies at about 12.8°N (UNESCO). Lake Tanganyika lies along the borders of Tanzania, the DRC, Burundi and Zambia, and Burundi, one of its shore countries, lies south of the equator. Patos Lagoon is in Rio Grande do Sul, in the extreme south-east of Brazil.

  • ✗ I Lake Tanganyika occupies the southern end of the Western Rift Valley, with ports at Bujumbura in Burundi, Kalemie in the DRC, Mpulungu in Zambia, and Ujiji and Kigoma in Tanzania. UPSC's official key treats the equator as not passing through it; we could not confirm its latitude from an official source, so we do not explain it here.
  • ✗ II UNESCO gives Tonlé Sap's latitude as 12.8135 (north), in Cambodia.
  • ✗ III Patos Lagoon lies in Rio Grande do Sul, in the extreme south-east of Brazil; it is the largest lagoon in Brazil. UPSC's official key treats the equator as not passing through it.

Remember · Tonlé Sap ≈ 12.8°N (Cambodia). Lake Tanganyika: rift lake on the Tanzania, DRC, Burundi and Zambia borders. Patos Lagoon: Rio Grande do Sul, extreme south-east Brazil.

Consider the following countries:

  1. I.United Kingdom
  2. II.Denmark
  3. III.New Zealand
  4. IV.Australia
  5. V.Brazil

How many of the above countries have more than four time zones?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (b) Only four

UPSC's official answer: (b) · the answer UPSC accepted, and the one that counts in the exam

Also defensible: (c)

  • Brazil is the clear exclusion: its legal time uses exactly four zones, 'UTC - 5 hours UTC - 4 hours UTC - 3 hours UTC - 2 hours', so it does not have more than four.
  • UPSC's (b) counts the other four with their overseas territories: the United Kingdom's Overseas Territories span 'nine time zones'; Australia has three mainland zones plus Norfolk Island (UTC+11), Christmas Island (UTC+7) and the Cocos Islands (UTC+6:30); New Zealand has its mainland, the Chatham Islands '45 minutes ahead', Tokelau, and the Cook Islands and Niue; Denmark has its mainland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland's three zones.
  • Counted strictly by distinct standard offsets, Denmark falls short: UTC+1 (Denmark), UTC+0 (shared by the Faroe Islands and Danmarkshavn), UTC-2 (most of Greenland since 2023) and UTC-4 (Pituffik) make four, not more. That leaves the United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand: three, option (c).
  • New Zealand's own count depends on the Cook Islands and Niue, each 'a self-governing state in free association with New Zealand' rather than part of it; without them New Zealand has UTC+12, UTC+12:45 and Tokelau's UTC+13, and only two countries remain (d). The item turns on the counting convention.

UPSC's key is (b), on the usual tally that counts overseas territories and associated states; by distinct standard offsets Denmark has four and New Zealand three, which gives (c) or even (d). In the exam, use the common tally with territories, as UPSC does.

This box is Minimalist IAS's analysis, with its sources; it does not change UPSC's answer.

Counted with overseas territories and associated states, as the usual tally does, four of the five countries have more than four time zones: the United Kingdom (its Overseas Territories span nine zones), Australia (three mainland zones plus Norfolk, Christmas and Cocos Islands at the least), New Zealand (mainland, the Chatham Islands, Tokelau, and the associated Cook Islands and Niue) and Denmark (mainland, the Faroe Islands and Greenland's three zones). Brazil's legal time uses exactly four zones, UTC-5 to UTC-2, so it does not exceed four: (b).

  • ✓ I The House of Commons Foreign Affairs Committee notes that the British Overseas Territories are spread across nine time zones, so the United Kingdom exceeds four zones once its territories are counted.
  • ✓ II Denmark's count is mainland Denmark (UTC+1), the Faroe Islands (Greenwich Mean Time in winter) and Greenland, which is divided into three time zones (UTC-4 at Pituffik, UTC-2 for most of the island, UTC+0 at Danmarkshavn): five zones by the usual tally.
  • ✓ III New Zealand's count is New Zealand Standard Time (UTC+12), Chatham Island Standard Time, 45 minutes ahead of it, the territory of Tokelau (UTC+13) and the associated states of the Cook Islands (UTC-10) and Niue (UTC-11): five by the usual tally.
  • ✓ IV The Australian Government's own table lists three mainland zones plus Norfolk Island (UTC+11), Christmas Island (UTC+7) and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands (UTC+6:30), six in all.
  • ✗ V Brazil's official legal time uses exactly four zones, UTC-5, UTC-4, UTC-3 and UTC-2, so it does not have more than four.

Remember · Count time zones with overseas territories: UK (nine), Australia (at least six), New Zealand (five) and Denmark (five) exceed four; Brazil has exactly four (UTC-5 to UTC-2).

Consider the following statements:

  1. I.Anadyr in Siberia and Nome in Alaska are a few kilometers from each other, but when people are waking up and getting set for breakfast in these cities, it would be different days.
  2. II.When it is Monday in Anadyr, it is Tuesday in Nome.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (a) I only

Siberia lies just west of the International Date Line and Alaska just east of it, so Anadyr and Nome are on different calendar days. Going eastward across the line you subtract a day, so Monday in Anadyr is Sunday in Nome, not Tuesday.

  • ✓ I The two cities lie on opposite sides of the International Date Line (about 180° longitude), so at the same moment their calendar dates differ; morning in Anadyr is still the previous day in Nome.
  • ✗ II Moving from Siberia to Alaska is a crossing towards the east, where you subtract a day (Monday becomes Sunday). Nome is therefore a day behind Anadyr, never a day ahead.

Remember · Crossing the International Date Line travelling eastward, subtract a day; travelling westward, add a day.

In how many of the above rows is the given information correctly matched?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (d) None

None of the rows is correct, because each region is paired with the wrong country. Mallorca belongs to Spain, Normandy to France and Sardinia to Italy.

  • ✗ I Mallorca is the largest of the Balearic Islands and belongs to Spain, not Italy; UNESCO lists its Serra de Tramuntana landscape as a Spanish site.
  • ✗ II Normandy is a region of northern France; NCERT calls it the French province whose duke conquered England in the eleventh century. It is not part of Spain.
  • ✗ III Sardinia is a large Mediterranean island belonging to Italy, not France; UNESCO lists Su Nuraxi di Barumini in Sardinia as an Italian site.

Which of the following countries are well known as the two largest cocoa producers in the world?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (c) Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana

Cocoa needs a hot, wet equatorial climate, and West Africa's Gulf of Guinea coast supplies most of the world's crop. Côte d'Ivoire is the largest producer and Ghana the second; the other pairs lie in drier parts of Africa and are not significant cocoa growers.

  • ✓ (c) Côte d'Ivoire is the world's largest cocoa producer, and it and Ghana are the largest cocoa exporters; with Cameroon they account for nearly two-thirds of global cocoa exports.
  • ✗ (a) Algeria and Morocco lie in North Africa's dry belt; neither is among the handful of countries that grow almost all of the world's cocoa.
  • ✗ (d) Neither Madagascar nor Mozambique is among the nine countries that the International Cocoa Organization says produce over 93% of world cocoa.

Remember · Cocoa belt = West Africa's Gulf of Guinea coast. Côte d'Ivoire is No. 1, Ghana No. 2; together they dominate world cocoa supply.

Consider the following countries:

  1. 1.Finland
  2. 2.Germany
  3. 3.Norway
  4. 4.Russia

How many of the above countries have a border with the North Sea?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (b) Only two

The North Sea lies between Great Britain and the North European mainland. Its shores belong to Norway, Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, France and the United Kingdom (with Sweden on the Kattegat side). Finland and Russia face the Baltic Sea instead, so only Germany and Norway qualify.

  • ✗ 1. Finland's coasts are on the Baltic Sea — the Gulf of Bothnia and the Gulf of Finland — not the North Sea.
  • ✓ 2. Germany's north-western coast, with the Elbe and Weser estuaries, opens onto the North Sea.
  • ✓ 3. Norway's southern and western coast borders the North Sea.
  • ✗ 4. Russia's European coasts are on the Baltic (Gulf of Finland, Kaliningrad), the Barents and White Seas and the Black Sea — none on the North Sea.

Remember · North Sea countries: UK, Norway, Denmark, Germany, Netherlands, Belgium, France. Finland and Russia are Baltic, not North Sea, states.

1.Central AsiaVosgesFold mountain
2.EuropeAlpsBlock mountain
3.North AmericaAppalachiansFold mountain
4.South AmericaAndesFold mountain

In how many of the above rows is the given information correctly matched?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (b) Only two

Rows 3 and 4 are right: the Appalachians and the Andes are fold mountains raised where plates converged. Row 1 is wrong twice over — the Vosges are in Europe (France) and are a block mountain beside the Rhine rift valley; row 2 is wrong because the Alps are young fold mountains, not block mountains.

  • ✗ 1. The Vosges are in north-eastern France, west of the Rhine Graben — a sunken block of crust. They are a classic block (horst) mountain of Europe, not a fold range of Central Asia.
  • ✗ 2. The Alps belong to the young zone of continental collision that runs from the Himalayas to Europe; they are fold mountains, not block mountains.
  • ✓ 3. The Appalachians formed in continental collisions 500–300 million years ago; their sedimentary layers were folded and faulted. They are old, worn-down fold mountains.
  • ✓ 4. The Andes were raised as the oceanic Nazca Plate pushed under the South American Plate — a convergent-boundary fold range.

Remember · Fold: Himalayas, Alps, Andes, Rockies (young); Appalachians, Aravallis, Urals (old). Block: Vosges and Black Forest on either side of the Rhine rift valley.

Consider the following pairs:

CountryAnimal found in its natural habitat
1.BrazilIndri
2.IndonesiaElk
3.MadagascarBonobo

How many of the pairs given above are correctly matched?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (d) None

Every pair is shuffled. The indri is a lemur that lives only in Madagascar, the bonobo is an African ape found in the Congo basin forests of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and the elk is a large deer of North America and the cold uplands of Asia; none of them occurs wild in the country it is paired with.

  • ✗ 1. The indri (Indri indri), the largest of the lemurs, lives in the eastern rainforests of Madagascar and is Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Lemurs do not occur naturally in South America, so Brazil is wrong.
  • ✗ 2. The elk (wapiti) is a large deer known from North America, where scientists call it Cervus canadensis, and it is also found in parts of Central and East Asia. Tropical Indonesia has no wild elk.
  • ✗ 3. The bonobo, or pygmy chimpanzee, is an African great ape; UNESCO notes it as a threatened species of Salonga National Park in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Madagascar has no apes.

Remember · Indri = Madagascar (largest lemur). Bonobo = DR Congo only (Salonga NP). Elk/wapiti = North America and Central/East Asia. Madagascar has lemurs but no apes.

Consider the following statements:

  1. Statement-I: Sumed pipeline is a strategic route for Persian Gulf oil and natural gas shipments to Europe.
  2. Statement-II: Sumed pipeline connects the Red Sea with the Mediterranean Sea.

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above statements?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (a) Both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct and Statement-II explains Statement-I

The SUMED pipeline runs across Egypt and carries crude oil from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. Together with the Suez Canal it forms a strategic route for Persian Gulf energy shipments to Europe. The Red Sea-Mediterranean link is exactly what makes it a route to Europe, so Statement-II explains Statement-I.

  • ✓ Statement-I The US Energy Information Administration calls the Suez Canal and the SUMED Pipeline strategic routes for Persian Gulf crude oil, petroleum products and LNG shipments to Europe and North America.
  • ✓ Statement-II The roughly 200-mile SUMED Pipeline carries crude oil northbound through Egypt from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. It is the only alternative for such crude if ships cannot pass through the Suez Canal, which is why it works as a route to Europe.

Remember · SUMED pipeline: about 200 miles across Egypt, carrying crude oil from the Red Sea to the Mediterranean; the alternative to the Suez Canal for such crude.

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.The Red Sea receives very little precipitation in any form.
  2. 2.No water enters the Red Sea from rivers.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (c) Both 1 and 2

Both statements are correct. The Red Sea lies in an arid region: no river drains into it and rainfall is scant. With very high evaporation and little fresh water coming in, it is one of the saltiest seas.

  • ✓ 1. The Red Sea region is arid with little precipitation. The UN Regular Process assessment calls it an arid area with high evaporation, and NOAA explains its high salinity by very high evaporation and little fresh-water inflow.
  • ✓ 2. No river brings water into the Red Sea; the UN assessment marks it as a sea with 'no rivers'. With so little fresh water, evaporation keeps the sea very salty; NCERT gives its salinity as high as 41 parts per thousand.

Remember · Red Sea: arid, no rivers, scant rain, very high evaporation and very high salinity (about 41 parts per thousand).

Consider the following statements:

  1. Statement-I: There is instability and worsening security situation in the Sahel region.
  2. Statement-II: There have been military takeovers/coups d'état in several countries of the Sahel region in the recent past.

Which one of the following is correct in respect of the above statements?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (a) Both Statement-I and Statement-II are correct and Statement-II explains Statement-I

Both statements are correct. UN briefings to the Security Council describe armed groups and violent extremists gaining influence across West Africa and the Sahel, with security deteriorating in large parts of the region. Repeated military coups, in Mali and Burkina Faso among others, are themselves destabilizing governments, so Statement-II helps explain Statement-I.

  • ✓ Statement-I UN officials told the Security Council that security had again deteriorated in large parts of the region, and voiced concern at terrorist threats spreading from the Sahel towards coastal West African countries.
  • ✓ Statement-II The President of the ECOWAS Commission cited a recent spate of military coups in the region, including in Mali and Burkina Faso. The UN briefing noted that such repeated coups are destabilizing governments, which adds to the instability in Statement-I.

Remember · Sahel: rising armed-group violence and repeated military coups (Mali, Burkina Faso and others) feed each other's instability.

About three-fourths of world's cobalt, a metal required for the manufacture of batteries for electric motor vehicles, is produced by

Answer & explanation

Answer: (c) the Democratic Republic of the Congo

The Democratic Republic of the Congo dominates cobalt mining, supplying roughly 70 per cent or more of the world's mined cobalt, most of it from its copper-cobalt belt in the south-east. Much of this is refined in China and used in rechargeable batteries.

  • ✓ (c) The US Geological Survey reported that Congo (Kinshasa) remained the world's leading source of mined cobalt in 2022, with about 70% of world mine production.
  • ✗ (a) Argentina is known for lithium brines, another battery mineral, not cobalt.
  • ✗ (d) Kazakhstan is the world's largest uranium producer; it is not a major cobalt source.

  • ✓ (a) Cameroon shares the north-western Congo Basin with the Central African Republic and the Republic of Congo; UNESCO sites such as Sangha Trinational and the Dja Faunal Reserve lie in its forests.
  • ✗ (b) Nigeria's main river system is the Niger and its tributary the Benue, which flow to the Gulf of Guinea, not the Congo.
  • ✗ (d) Uganda, like South Sudan, drains into the White Nile system through Lake Victoria and Lake Albert, so it belongs to the Nile basin.

Remember · Congo Basin countries: DR Congo, Republic of Congo, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Gabon, Equatorial Guinea. Uganda and South Sudan: Nile basin; Nigeria: Niger basin.

Consider the following countries:

  1. 1.Bulgaria
  2. 2.Czech Republic
  3. 3.Hungary
  4. 4.Latvia
  5. 5.Lithuania
  6. 6.Romania

How many of the above-mentioned countries share a land border with Ukraine?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (a) Only two

Only two of the six, Hungary and Romania, share a land border with Ukraine. Ukraine has seven land neighbours: Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Moldova.

  • ✗ 1. Bulgaria does not touch Ukraine; it is separated from it by Romania and the Black Sea.
  • ✗ 2. The Czech Republic has no border with Ukraine; Slovakia and Poland lie between them.
  • ✓ 3. Hungary lies on Ukraine's southwest border, so it counts.
  • ✗ 4. Latvia is a Baltic state. It borders Estonia, Lithuania, Russia and Belarus, not Ukraine.
  • ✗ 5. Lithuania borders Latvia, Belarus, Poland and Russia (Kaliningrad), not Ukraine.
  • ✓ 6. Romania also borders Ukraine to the southwest, so it counts.

Remember · Ukraine's seven land neighbours: Russia, Belarus, Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania, Moldova. Of the countries in this list only Hungary and Romania qualify.

Which one of the following countries has been suffering from decades of civil strife and food shortages and was in news in the recent past for its very severe famine?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (d) Somalia

Somalia, in the Horn of Africa, is the country that fits: years of conflict plus a prolonged drought pushed it to the edge of famine in 2022, and UN agencies issued repeated famine warnings.

  • ✓ (d) In April 2022 the UN agencies FAO, OCHA, UNICEF and WFP warned that millions of Somalis were at risk of sliding into famine because of prolonged drought, and WFP describes the country as facing protracted conflict, drought and displacement.
  • ✗ (a) Angola is in southern Africa. It was not the subject of the UN famine warnings that made Somalia the news in 2022.
  • ✗ (b) Costa Rica (Central America) and Ecuador (South America) had no comparable civil strife or famine warning, so options (b) and (c) are easily ruled out.

Remember · Somalia (Horn of Africa): protracted conflict plus a prolonged drought led UN agencies to warn of famine in 2022.

Consider the following pairs:

Regions often mentioned in newsReason for being in news
1.North Kivu and IturiWar between Armenia and Azerbaijan
2.Nagorno-KarabakhInsurgency in Mozambique
3.Kherson and ZaporizhzhiaDispute between Israel and Lebanon

How many of the above pairs are correctly matched?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (d) None

None of the pairs is correct; each region has been paired with the wrong conflict. North Kivu and Ituri are in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nagorno-Karabakh is at the centre of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, and Kherson and Zaporizhzhia are regions of Ukraine occupied by Russia.

  • ✗ 1. North Kivu and Ituri are provinces of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where armed attacks and clashes between armed groups (including M23) and the army have displaced millions. The Armenia-Azerbaijan war is a different conflict.
  • ✗ 2. Nagorno-Karabakh is the region at the heart of the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict; the UN Security Council has discussed the Lachin Corridor linking it with Armenia. The Mozambique insurgency is unrelated.
  • ✗ 3. Kherson and Zaporizhzhia, with Donetsk and Luhansk, are Ukrainian regions that the UN General Assembly said are temporarily occupied by Russia. They have nothing to do with an Israel-Lebanon dispute.

Remember · North Kivu and Ituri: DR Congo. Nagorno-Karabakh: Armenia-Azerbaijan. Kherson and Zaporizhzhia: Ukraine, occupied by Russia.

Consider the following pairs:

Area of conflict mentioned in newsCountry where it is located
1.DonbasSyria
2.KachinEthiopia
3.TigrayNorth Yemen

How many of the above pairs are correctly matched?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (d) None

None of the pairs is correct: Donbas is in Ukraine, Kachin is in Myanmar and Tigray is in Ethiopia. Each conflict zone has been attached to the wrong country.

  • ✗ 1. Donbas is the coal-and-industry region of eastern Ukraine made up of the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, where fighting has displaced people since 2014. It has nothing to do with Syria.
  • ✗ 2. Kachin is a state in northern Myanmar, on the border with China. Fighting between government troops and Kachin rebels (the Kachin Independence Organization) has displaced tens of thousands there. It is not in Ethiopia.
  • ✗ 3. Tigray is a region in northern Ethiopia, the centre of the northern Ethiopia conflict that began in November 2020. It has no link with North Yemen.

Remember · Donbas: Ukraine. Kachin: Myanmar. Tigray: Ethiopia. Place every conflict zone in its own country before matching.

In the recent years Chad, Guinea, Mali and Sudan caught the international attention for which one of the following reasons common to all of them?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (d) Successful coups

All four countries saw armed forces seize power in 2020-21: Mali in 2020 and again in May 2021, Chad in April 2021, Guinea in September 2021 and Sudan in October 2021. The UN itself described these as a wave of takeovers across the Sahel and West Africa.

  • ✓ (d) Military takeovers happened in Mali, Chad, Guinea and Sudan between 2020 and 2021. This is the one feature common to all four; the UN linked them together while reacting to another coup in Burkina Faso in January 2022.
  • ✗ (a) None of these events was about a rare-earth discovery. The four countries are in the news for political instability, not for a shared mineral find.
  • ✗ (b) No shared story of Chinese military bases links the four countries.
  • ✗ (c) Desertification of the Sahel is a regional concern, but it does not apply to all four: Guinea is a humid Atlantic-coast country, far from the Sahara, and the option does not describe why they were in the news.

Remember · Mali (2020, 2021), Chad (2021), Guinea (2021), Sudan (2021) and later Burkina Faso (2022) all saw military seizures of power; the common thread is coups.

Which one of the following lakes of West Africa has become dry and turned into a desert?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (b) Lake Faguibine

Lake Faguibine, near Timbuktu in northern Mali, was fed by overflow from the Niger. Droughts in the 1970s dried it, and sand then choked the channels from the river, so even when rains returned the water could not reach it; the lake bed has largely turned to desert.

  • ✓ (b) UNEP reports that Lake Faguibine has been dry since the 1970s: droughts emptied the lake system and sand-filled channels cut it off from the Niger's floods.
  • ✗ (a) Lake Victoria is in East Africa (shared by Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania), not West Africa, and it has not dried up.
  • ✗ (d) Lake Volta in Ghana is a large artificial reservoir behind the Akosombo Dam and still holds water for hydropower; Lake Oguta in Nigeria is also a living lake.

Remember · Lake Faguibine (Mali, near Timbuktu): Niger-fed lake system dried since the 1970s droughts — a Sahel symbol of desertification; UNEP has worked on reviving it.

The term "Levant" often heard in the news roughly corresponds to which of the following regions?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (a) Region along the eastern Mediterranean shores

The Levant is the land along the eastern shore of the Mediterranean — today's Syria, Lebanon, Israel, the Palestinian territories and Jordan, often with Cyprus and Turkey's Hatay province. The word comes from the French for 'rising', the direction of the sunrise as seen from Europe.

  • ✓ (a) The Levant covers the coastal lands of the eastern Mediterranean and their hinterland: Syria, Lebanon, Israel, the West Bank and Gaza, and Jordan.
  • ✗ (b) The North African coast west of Egypt — Libya, Tunisia, Algeria and Morocco — is called the Maghreb, not the Levant.
  • ✗ (d) The Levant is only the eastern end of the Mediterranean; it does not include the European or North African coasts.

Remember · Levant = eastern Mediterranean coast (Syria, Lebanon, Israel–Palestine, Jordan); Maghreb = north-west Africa (Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya).

Which of the above have borders with Afghanistan?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (c) 3, 4 and 5 only

Afghanistan's northern neighbours are three Central Asian republics — Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan — along with Iran to the west, Pakistan to the east and south, and China at the tip of the Wakhan Corridor. Kyrgyzstan and Azerbaijan do not touch it.

  • ✗ 1. Azerbaijan lies in the South Caucasus on the western shore of the Caspian Sea, with Iran and Turkmenistan's sea front between it and Afghanistan.
  • ✗ 2. Kyrgyzstan lies north of Tajikistan; the narrow Wakhan Corridor keeps Afghanistan from reaching it.
  • ✓ 3. Tajikistan shares Afghanistan's long north-eastern border, much of it along the Amu Darya (Panj) river.
  • ✓ 4. Turkmenistan borders Afghanistan in the north-west.
  • ✓ 5. Uzbekistan has a short border with Afghanistan along the Amu Darya, near Termez.

Remember · Afghanistan's six neighbours: Pakistan, Iran, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and China (via the Wakhan Corridor). India also claims a border through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.Vietnam has been one of the fastest growing economies in the world in the recent years.
  2. 2.Vietnam is led by a multi-party political system.
  3. 3.Vietnam's economic growth is linked to its integration with global supply chains and focus on exports.
  4. 4.For a long time Vietnam's low labour costs and stable exchange rates have attracted global manufacturers.
  5. 5.Vietnam has the most productive e-service sector in the Indo-Pacific region.

Which of the statements given above are correct?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (c) 1, 3 and 4

Statements 1, 3 and 4 are correct. Vietnam's growth has been rapid and export-led, but it is a one-party state led by the Communist Party, not a multi-party system, and its strength lies in manufacturing rather than services.

  • ✓ 1. The World Bank describes four decades of rapid growth in Viet Nam since the Doi Moi reforms of 1986.
  • ✗ 2. Article 4 of Vietnam's Constitution makes the Communist Party of Vietnam the force leading the State and society; it is a one-party system.
  • ✓ 3. Growth was amplified by strategic integration into global trade and investment flows, as the World Bank notes.
  • ✓ 4. The OECD lists competitive labour costs (with proximity, trade agreements and infrastructure) among the reasons manufacturers relocate to Viet Nam. UPSC's official key counts the statement as correct; we could not confirm the exchange-rate detail from an official source, so we do not explain it here.
  • ✗ 5. UPSC's key treats this as incorrect. Vietnam's growth story is built on manufacturing exports; nothing in the sources supports a claim of regional leadership in e-services.

Remember · Vietnam: Doi Moi (1986), export-led growth in global supply chains, one-party Communist state.

Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.Bidibidi is a large refugee settlement in north-western Kenya.
  2. 2.Some people who fled from South Sudan civil war live in Bidibidi.
  3. 3.Some people who fled from civil war in Somalia live in Dadaab refugee complex in Kenya.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (c) 2 and 3

Bidibidi is in Uganda, not Kenya, so statement 1 is wrong. Statements 2 and 3 are right: Bidibidi shelters refugees from South Sudan's conflict, and Kenya's Dadaab complex was set up for refugees escaping the civil war in Somalia.

  • ✗ 1. Bidibidi settlement lies in Uganda's Yumbe district, in the north of that country. It was opened in August 2016 and was described as the largest refugee settlement in the world by December 2016.
  • ✓ 2. It was opened to house part of the flow of South Sudanese refugees who crossed into northern Uganda after the conflict spread to South Sudan's Equatoria region.
  • ✓ 3. Dadaab, in Kenya, was established in 1991 when refugees fleeing the civil war in Somalia began crossing the border, with a large second influx in 2011.

Remember · Bidibidi = northern Uganda (South Sudanese refugees). Dadaab = Kenya (refugees from Somalia's civil war). Do not swap the countries.

Which one of the following statements best reflects the issue with Senkaku Islands, sometimes mentioned in the news?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (b) China and Japan engage in maritime disputes over these islands in East China Sea.

The Senkaku Islands are a group of small uninhabited islands in the East China Sea that Japan administers and China (and Taiwan) also claim, so China and Japan are in a maritime dispute over them. The other options describe things that have no basis: they are natural islands, not in the South China Sea, and no US base or ICJ ruling is involved.

  • ✓ (b) Japan administers the islands, which it places under Ishigaki City, Okinawa. China and Taiwan press their own claims, which they began asserting around 1970-71 after a UN-linked survey pointed to possible oil under the seabed.
  • ✗ (a) They are natural islands and rocks in the East China Sea, not artificial islands and not in the South China Sea.
  • ✗ (c) The islands are uninhabited and no permanent American base has been set up on them to help Taiwan.
  • ✗ (d) The International Court of Justice has not ruled on them, and the claimants are Japan, China and Taiwan, not South-East Asian countries.

Remember · Senkaku (Japanese name) or Diaoyu (Chinese name) islands: East China Sea, administered by Japan, claimed by China and Taiwan.
