Essay paper: questions, answered

What is the syllabus for the UPSC Essay paper?

UPSC does not list topics. Its syllabus says: "Essay: Candidates may be required to write essays on multiple topics. They will be expected to keep closely to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in orderly fashion, and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression."

How many essays are written in UPSC Mains?

Two. In recent papers UPSC has set eight topics in two sections of four; candidates write one essay from each section — 125 marks each, in about 1,000–1,200 words — for 250 marks in three hours.

What kinds of essay topics does UPSC set?

From 2016 to 2026, the most frequent themes were philosophy, values & abstract ideas (33), economy, development & work (9), democracy, polity & governance (8). Recent papers lean on philosophical quotations as well as issue-based topics.
