The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee is constituted under the

Answer & explanation

Answer: (c) Environment (Protection) Act, 1986

The Genetic Engineering Appraisal Committee (GEAC) is set up under the 1989 Rules for hazardous micro-organisms and genetically engineered organisms. Those Rules were framed under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. It works in the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.

  • ✓ (c) The 1989 Rules on genetically engineered organisms were made under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The GEAC is the statutory committee created by these Rules to appraise GM organisms from the environmental angle.
  • ✗ (a) The Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006 set up the FSSAI and food-safety standards. It does not create the GEAC.
  • ✗ (b) The Geographical Indications Act, 1999 deals with registration and protection of GI tags such as Darjeeling Tea. It has nothing to do with GM organisms.
  • ✗ (d) The Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972 covers wildlife and protected areas. It is not the parent law for the GEAC.

Remember · GEAC is a statutory body of the Environment Ministry, set up under the 1989 Rules framed under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. It appraises proposals for the release of GM organisms into the environment.
