The Gupta age (fourth to sixth century CE) set the classical norms of northern Indian art, letters and science, while the imperial Cholas (ninth to thirteenth century) carried Dravida temple culture, bronze casting and local self-government to their height.

Gupta contributions

  • Art: the serene Sarnath and Mathura Buddha images fixed the iconographic ideal; the Ajanta murals of the Vakataka–Gupta age and the Varaha relief at Udayagiri define the classical style.
  • Architecture: the earliest surviving structural temples, the Dashavatara temple at Deogarh and the brick temple at Bhitargaon, began the nagara form with its shikhara.
  • Literature: Kalidasa's Abhijnanashakuntalam and Meghaduta, Vishakhadatta's Mudrarakshasa, and the compilation of the Puranas and Dharmashastras made Sanskrit the language of court, inscription and learning.
  • Science: Aryabhata's Aryabhatiya (499 CE) gave place-value arithmetic, the earth's rotation and the true cause of eclipses; Varahamihira's Brihat Samhita and the rust-free iron pillar at Mehrauli show its astronomy and metallurgy.
  • Learning and faith: Nalanda mahavihara under Kumaragupta I, Bhagavata devotion and image worship, and gold coins of high artistry.

Chola contributions

  • Temple architecture: Brihadisvara at Thanjavur (Rajaraja I, 1010 CE), Gangaikondacholapuram (Rajendra I) and Airavatesvara at Darasuram, UNESCO's Great Living Chola Temples, perfected the Dravida style of towering vimana, gopuram and prakara.
  • Bronzes: lost-wax images, above all the Nataraja, are the summit of Indian metal sculpture.
  • Literature and religion: the Shaiva Tirumurai and the Vaishnava Nalayira Divya Prabandham were canonised; Kamban's Ramavataram and Sekkizhar's Periya Puranam were composed; temples nurtured music, dance and learning.
  • Statecraft: the Uttaramerur inscriptions record village sabhas chosen by lot (kudavolai), and detailed land surveys underpinned revenue administration.
  • Maritime reach: Rajendra I's expeditions to the Ganga and Srivijaya, and merchant guilds such as the Ainnurruvar, carried Tamil culture to Southeast Asia.

The Guptas gave India its classical forms in stone, verse and number; the Cholas gave those forms their most monumental expression in the south and carried them across the seas.
