UPSC Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2020, General Studies Paper II (CSAT), Question 62 — Reading comprehension.

Read this question in English

Which one of the following is the most logical and rational inference that can be made from the above passage?

(a) India’s commitment to reduce emissions by 33% is unlikely to be achieved. · (b) India should import gas rather than invest in renewable resources. · (c) Getting renewable resources to market too soon may be costly. · (d) India should put in more efforts in the exploration of natural gas.

Renewables are 'still going through their cost curves and learning curves', and business houses hesitate to invest heavily while 'the technology is not yet ready'. The sound inference is that pushing these resources to market before they mature may prove costly.

  • ✗ (a) The government is 'strongly committed' and acting on two fronts; the passage makes no prediction that the target will be missed.
  • ✗ (b) Importing gas is not mentioned, and the passage does not ask India to stop investing in renewables.
  • ✓ (c) Technology still on its cost and learning curves is expensive per unit of output — which is why businesses are 'wary of investing too heavily' now.
  • ✗ (d) The passage mentions a push towards a gas-based economy but nothing about exploration.

Remember · Inferences should stay as cautious as the passage; predictions of failure and new policy prescriptions usually overreach.
