The Caste Thread Travels Overseas: Dalit Students Abroad

Why in news: Dalit students at universities such as Oxford, SOAS and Stanford report that the dominant-caste Indian diaspora has carried caste prejudice into classrooms and social life abroad.

For Mains: Use in GS1 (caste, diaspora, globalisation) to show that caste adapts to new settings rather than disappearing with migration, education or urbanisation.

RTI at 21: The Gaps in Proactive Disclosure

Why in news: As the RTI Act turns 21, an analysis of Central Information Commission data shows that most public authorities still fall short of the suo motu disclosure the law requires.

For Mains: Use in GS2 (transparency, accountability) and GS4 (probity) to argue that RTI works best when disclosure is the default rather than something citizens must ask for.

Make the Data Protection Board Functional: Kerala HC

Why in news: The Kerala High Court directed the Centre to make the Data Protection Board under the DPDP Act functional within eight weeks, while hearing a PIL on passenger data collected at airports.

For Mains: Use in GS2 (rights, governance) and GS3 (cyber security) to show that a data protection law is only as strong as the body that enforces it.

Mizoram to Count Refugees Separately in Census 2027

Why in news: Mizoram has decided to enumerate refugees living temporarily in the State during the second phase of Census 2027, recording their details on a list separate from Indian citizens.

For Mains: Use in GS2 (refugee policy, Centre–State relations) and GS3 (border management) to show the gap between ethnic solidarity in border States and national security concerns.

Katchatheevu: What the 1974 and 1976 Agreements Settled

Why in news: Sri Lankan President Anura Kumara Dissanayake said India has acknowledged that Katchatheevu belongs to Sri Lanka, citing the Centre's statement in India's Supreme Court last week.

For Mains: Use in GS2 (India and its neighbourhood) to discuss how livelihood disputes of fishermen can strain otherwise close relations, and the case for joint management of the Palk Bay fishery.

Why the UAPA Needs Reform

Why in news: On the second death anniversary of Prof. G.N. Saibaba, who spent a decade in prison before his acquittal under the UAPA, legal scholars renewed calls to reform the law.

For Mains: Use in GS3 (internal security) and GS2 (rights) to discuss balancing national security against due process, and why speedy trials matter as much as tough laws.

Global Warming, Sex Reversal and Frog Extinction Risk

Why in news: A study of agile frogs in Hungary, published in Science Advances, finds that heat-driven sex reversal lowers breeding success and could push populations towards extinction years sooner.

For Mains: Use in GS3 (climate change, biodiversity) to show that warming harms species not only by heat stress but by distorting reproduction — a less visible route to extinction.

TRISHNA: Indo-French Thermal Imaging Satellite

Why in news: ISRO says TRISHNA, a joint thermal infrared satellite with France's CNES, will be launched within the next 12–16 months.

For Mains: Use in GS3 (space technology, water and agriculture) to show how space cooperation delivers tools for climate adaptation and precision irrigation.

No 'Slow Learners': Attitude and Expectations

Why in news: An educator argues that labelling students as 'slow learners' damages their potential, and that teachers should adapt their methods to how each student learns.

For Mains: Use in GS4 (attitude, social influence, empathy) to show how a public servant's assumptions about a citizen can shape outcomes — in classrooms, clinics or police stations.
