Answer & explanation

Answer: (c) elected by the Provincial Legislative Assemblies

The provincial members of the Constituent Assembly were chosen by indirect election. The voters were the members of the Provincial Legislative Assemblies set up under the Government of India Act, 1935. The people did not choose them directly, and neither the parties nor the government nominated them.

  • ✗ (a) The people did not vote directly. The election was indirect, through the members of the provincial legislatures.
  • ✗ (b) The Congress and the Muslim League did not nominate the members. Both parties won most seats because of their strength in the provincial assemblies, but the members were elected.
  • ✓ (c) Members from the Provinces were elected by the members of the Provincial Legislative Assemblies, the bodies established under the Government of India Act, 1935.
  • ✗ (d) The Government did not pick the provincial members for their constitutional expertise. They were elected by the provincial legislatures.

Remember · The Constituent Assembly first met on 9 December 1946. Its provincial members were indirectly elected by the Provincial Legislative Assemblies of the 1935 Act, not by universal adult franchise.
