Consider the following statements
The Parliamentary Committee on Public Accounts:
- 1.Consists of not more than 25 Members of the Lok Sabha.
- 2.Scrutinises appropriation and finance accounts of the Government.
- 3.Examines the report of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India.
Which of the statements given above is/are correct?
Answer & explanation
Answer: (b) 2 and 3 only
The Public Accounts Committee has not more than 22 members drawn from both Houses: 15 elected by the Lok Sabha and not more than 7 from the Rajya Sabha. Its core work is to examine the Appropriation Accounts, the CAG's report on them, and the annual Finance Accounts of the Government. So statements 2 and 3 are correct and statement 1 is not.
- ✗ 1. The PAC is a joint committee of not more than 22 members. Fifteen are elected by the Lok Sabha and not more than seven are from the Rajya Sabha. Describing it as a body of up to 25 Lok Sabha members misstates both its size and its composition.
- ✓ 2. The Committee examines the Appropriation Accounts, which show how sums granted by Parliament were spent. It also examines the annual Finance Accounts of the Government.
- ✓ 3. The Committee examines the CAG's report on the Appropriation Accounts and other audit reports laid before Parliament. The CAG assists the Committee in this work.
Remember · PAC: up to 22 members (15 Lok Sabha + up to 7 Rajya Sabha), and no ministers. It scrutinises the appropriation accounts, the finance accounts and the CAG's audit reports.
