Based on the above passage, the following assumptions have been made:
- 1.Poor countries need to bring about change in their existing farming techniques.
- 2.Developed countries have better infrastructure and they waste less food.
Which of the above assumptions is/are valid?
Answer & explanation
Answer: (a) 1 only
The author says technology is of little use unless it is adapted, and that in the developing world this applies “as much to existing farming techniques” — so poor countries must change how they farm. The passage makes no comparison of infrastructure or food waste with developed countries.
- ✓ 1. Extending “the best of today’s agricultural practices”, such as how much fertilizer to apply and when, to smallholders in Africa and Asia would greatly raise food supply — the author takes it for granted that their present techniques need to change.
- ✗ 2. Better roads and storage are recommended for the developing world, but the passage never says developed countries have better infrastructure or waste less food.
Remember · An assumption must be something the author’s argument needs; a comparison the passage never draws is not one.
