EasyWhich one of the following pairs of islands is separated from each other by the 'Ten Degree Channel'?
Answer & explanation
Answer: (a) Andaman and Nicobar
The Ten Degree Channel is the stretch of sea at about 10° N latitude that divides the Andaman Islands in the north from the Nicobar Islands in the south. Together these form India's Andaman and Nicobar group.
- ✓ (a) The Andaman group lies in the north and the Nicobar group in the south. The waterbody separating them is the Ten Degree Channel.
- ✗ (b) The Ten Degree Channel lies between the Andaman and Nicobar groups, both part of India. The Nicobar Islands are separated from Sumatra by the Six Degree (Great) Channel.
- ✗ (c) Lakshadweep and the Maldives lie off India's west coast, on the other side of the peninsula. They are separated by the Eight Degree Channel, not the Ten Degree Channel.
- ✗ (d) Sumatra and Java are Indonesian islands separated by the Sunda Strait. The Ten Degree Channel is not between them.
Remember · Ten Degree Channel: Andaman (north) and Nicobar (south). Six Degree Channel: Nicobar and Sumatra. Eight Degree Channel: Lakshadweep (Minicoy) and the Maldives.
