Who of the following organized a march on the Tanjore coast to break the Salt Law in April 1930?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (b) C. Rajagopalachari

C. Rajagopalachari (Rajaji) was the Congress leader who organised the Salt Satyagraha in Tamil Nadu. In April 1930 his march went from Tiruchirappalli (Trichinopoly) to Vedaranyam on the Tanjore coast. It was the southern counterpart of Gandhi's Dandi March.

  • ✗ (a) V. O. Chidambaram Pillai was a Swadeshi-era leader in Tamil Nadu, best known for the Swadeshi Steam Navigation Company. He did not organise the 1930 salt march.
  • ✓ (b) Rajagopalachari organised and led the Vedaranyam march. It started at Tiruchirappalli in April 1930 and reached the Tanjore-district coast, where the salt law was broken.
  • ✗ (c) K. Kamaraj was a Congress worker in Tamil Nadu at the time. He was not the organiser of the Tanjore coast march, which Rajagopalachari led.
  • ✗ (d) Annie Besant is linked with the Home Rule League (1916). She was not involved in organising the 1930 Civil Disobedience salt marches.

Remember · Dandi (Gujarat) was Gandhi's salt march. Rajagopalachari's Tiruchirappalli-to-Vedaranyam march in April 1930 was the Tamil Nadu counterpart on the Tanjore coast.
