Agriculture economy, MSP & food security Easy

The Fair and Remunerative Price (FRP) of sugarcane is approved by the

Answer & explanation

Answer: (a) Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs

The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA), chaired by the Prime Minister, gives final approval to the FRP of sugarcane. For example, it approved the FRP payable by sugar mills for the 2015-16 sugar season. The other bodies listed do not approve it.

  • ✓ (a) The CCEA approves the FRP of sugarcane payable by sugar mills. For the 2015-16 sugar season it approved Rs 230 per quintal, linked to a basic recovery rate of 9.5 per cent.
  • ✗ (b) The Commission for Agricultural Costs and Prices (CACP) is an expert advisory body. It recommends the FRP, but the Government decides it, with the CCEA giving the approval. This is the most tempting wrong option.
  • ✗ (c) The Directorate of Marketing and Inspection works on agricultural marketing, grading and standardisation (Agmark). It does not approve sugarcane prices.
  • ✗ (d) An Agricultural Produce Market Committee regulates agricultural markets (mandis) under state law. It does not approve a national price for sugarcane.

Remember · The FRP of sugarcane is approved by the CCEA. The CACP only recommends it.
