GS Paper I 2019 · Q8

10 marks · 150 words Indian society & diversity

What makes the Indian society unique in sustaining its culture ? Discuss.

Approach · directive: “discuss”

What it asks · Identify the features of Indian society (pluralism, adaptability and continuity of institutions and values) that let its culture survive invasions, migrations and modernisation.

The question has 2 parts — answer each

  1. Discuss what makes Indian society unique in sustaining its culture: pluralism, assimilation, a philosophy of tolerance, carrier institutions and reform from within
  2. Discuss the strains that test this continuity

Open with · Indian culture has absorbed successive migrants and rulers, from Greeks and Scythians to Arabs, Turks and Europeans, while renewing its own traditions.

Cover

  • Unity in diversity: many languages, faiths, castes and regions coexist, and cultural identity rests on shared practices, not on a single creed or language.
  • Syncretism and assimilation: Bhakti and Sufi movements, composite architecture, music and cuisine show two-way borrowing rather than displacement of older traditions.
  • Philosophy of tolerance: traditions of debate and plural truths (Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, Jain anekantavada, Buddhist and Bhakti dissent) make room for difference.
  • Social institutions: family, village community, festivals, pilgrimage circuits and oral traditions pass values and skills from one generation to the next.
  • Reform from within: social reform movements, the Constitution's secular and rights framework and modern education let culture change without breaking (abolition of sati, temple entry).
  • Continuity through change: languages, crafts, festivals and knowledge systems have survived migration, invasion, colonial rule and globalisation by adapting.
  • Strains: caste hierarchy, gender inequality and communal politics test this resilience and need continuous reform.

Close with · India's culture endures because it is porous and self-correcting; keeping it so needs constitutional pluralism and continuing social reform.

Model answer · 212 words (UPSC limit 150) · Minimalist IAS

Indian society has absorbed successive migrants and rulers, from Greeks and Scythians to Arabs, Turks and Europeans, while renewing its own traditions. Its distinctiveness lies less in resisting change than in digesting it.

What sustains the culture

  • Unity in diversity: many languages, faiths, castes and regions coexist, and cultural identity rests on shared practices rather than on a single creed or tongue.
  • Syncretism: Bhakti and Sufi movements, composite architecture, music and cuisine show two-way borrowing rather than displacement of older traditions.
  • Philosophy of tolerance: traditions of debate and plural truths, Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, Jain anekantavada, Buddhist and Bhakti dissent, make room for difference.
  • Carrier institutions: family, village community, festivals, pilgrimage circuits and oral traditions pass values, skills and stories from one generation to the next.
  • Reform from within: the abolition of sati, temple entry, the Constitution's secular and rights framework and modern education let culture change without breaking.
  • Continuity through change: languages, crafts, festivals and knowledge systems have survived invasion, colonial rule and globalisation by adapting rather than freezing.

Strains on this resilience

  • Caste hierarchy, gender inequality and communal politics test the claim of tolerance and demand continuous reform.

India's culture endures because it is porous and self-correcting; keeping it so needs constitutional pluralism and continuing social reform rather than a defensive purity.
