What is the correct sequence of occurrence of the following cities in South-East Asia as one proceeds from south to north?

  1. 1.Bangkok
  2. 2.Hanoi
  3. 3.Jakarta
  4. 4.Singapore

Select the correct answer using the code given below.

Answer & explanation

Answer: (c) 3-4-1-2

Going north means going to higher latitudes. Jakarta is south of the equator at about 6°S. Singapore is just north of it at about 1°N. Bangkok is at about 13°N and Hanoi is at about 21°N. The order from south to north is therefore Jakarta, Singapore, Bangkok, Hanoi (3-4-1-2).

  • ✓ 3. Jakarta is the southernmost of the four, at about 6.1°S. It lies in the Southern Hemisphere on the north-west coast of Java.
  • ✓ 4. Singapore is at about 1.2°N. That is north of Jakarta but still very close to the equator.
  • ✓ 1. Bangkok is at about 13°45'N, clearly north of Singapore and south of Hanoi.
  • ✓ 2. Hanoi is the northernmost of the four, at about 21°N in the plains of northern Vietnam.
  • ✗ (a) 4-2-1-3 puts Jakarta last, as if it were the northernmost. Jakarta is in fact south of the equator.
  • ✗ (d) 4-3-2-1 puts Singapore first and Bangkok last. Jakarta (6°S) lies south of Singapore (1°N), and Bangkok lies south of Hanoi.

Remember · South-East Asian capitals from south to north: Jakarta (6°S), Singapore (1°N), Bangkok (13°N), Hanoi (21°N). Jakarta is the only one south of the equator.
