  3. 3.To provide for wage loss due to pregnancy and confinement.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (a) 1 and 2 only

Janani Suraksha Yojana (JSY) is a safe-motherhood scheme under the National Rural Health Mission, now the National Health Mission. It gives cash assistance to encourage poor women to deliver in health institutions. It does not compensate for wage loss. That is the purpose of the separate maternity benefit scheme: IGMSY at the time, now PMMVY.

  • ✓ 1. JSY aims to reduce maternal and neonatal deaths by promoting institutional delivery among poor pregnant women. ASHAs act as the link between these women and government health facilities.
  • ✓ 2. JSY is a centrally sponsored scheme that integrates cash assistance with delivery and post-delivery care. The mother receives a cash package for delivering in a health facility, and the ASHA gets a separate package.
  • ✗ 3. Partial compensation for wage loss is the aim of the maternity benefit scheme run by the Ministry of Women and Child Development. In 2012 this was the Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana; today it is PMMVY. It is not an aim of JSY.

Remember · JSY (launched 12 April 2005, now under NHM) = cash incentive for institutional delivery, with the ASHA as the link. Wage-loss compensation for pregnancy comes under the maternity benefit scheme (IGMSY, now PMMVY).
