Answer & explanation

Answer: (d) India's underwater observatory to scientifically study the Arctic region

IndARC is India's first multi-sensor moored (sub-surface) ocean observatory, deployed in 2014 in the Kongsfjorden fjord of the Arctic. It is an underwater platform for studying the Arctic, not a radar, a satellite or an Antarctic station.

  • ✗ (a) IndARC has nothing to do with defence radar. It is an ocean-observation platform developed by Ministry of Earth Sciences institutions.
  • ✗ (b) It is not a satellite. It is a set of sensors moored in the sea in an Arctic fjord.
  • ✗ (c) India's establishments in Antarctica are research stations such as Maitri and Bharati. IndARC is in the Arctic, in the Kongsfjorden fjord of Svalbard, Norway.
  • ✓ (d) IndARC, deployed in July 2014, is India's first multi-sensor moored observatory in the Arctic. It sits in the Kongsfjorden fjord, roughly halfway between Norway and the North Pole.

Remember · IndARC (2014) is India's first moored underwater observatory in the Arctic, in Kongsfjorden. It was developed by NIOT and NCAOR (now NCPOR).
