Which one of the following best describes the main objective of 'Seed Village Concept'?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (b) Involving the farmers for training in quality seed production and thereby to make available quality seeds to others at appropriate time and affordable cost

A seed village is a village where a trained group of farmers produces seed of various crops. They meet the needs of themselves, fellow farmers in the village and farmers of neighbouring villages, at the right time and at an affordable cost. Option (b) states exactly this.

  • ✓ (b) Training farmers to produce quality seed is the core of the seed village concept. So is making that seed available to others on time and at an affordable cost. Option (b) captures both.
  • ✗ (a) The aim is not simply to make farmers use their own seed and avoid buying from others. The programme aims to upgrade the quality of farmer-saved seed. It also trains farmers to produce quality seed and supply it to fellow farmers and neighbouring villages.
  • ✗ (c) The concept is not about setting aside villages exclusively for certified seed production. It is about a trained group of farmers within a village producing quality seed and supplying it locally, on time and at an affordable cost.
  • ✗ (d) The concept works through trained groups of farmers who supply seed locally. It does not involve finding village entrepreneurs and financing them to set up seed companies.

Remember · Seed village: trained farmers produce quality seed and supply it to themselves, fellow farmers and neighbouring villages on time at an affordable cost. The Seed Village Programme (Beej Gram Yojana) aims to upgrade farmer-saved seed.
