Consider the following statements:

  1. 1.Animal Welfare Board of India is established under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
  2. 2.National Tiger Conservation Authority is a statutory body.
  3. 3.National Ganga River Basin Authority is chaired by the Prime Minister.

Which of the statements given above is/are correct?

Answer & explanation

Answer: (b) 2 and 3 only

The Animal Welfare Board of India comes from the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, not the Environment (Protection) Act, so statement 1 is wrong. The NTCA is a statutory body, and the Prime Minister chaired the NGRBA, so statements 2 and 3 are correct.

  • ✗ 1. The AWBI is a statutory advisory body on animal welfare laws. Its legal basis is Section 4 of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, and it started functioning in 1962. It has no link to the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986.
  • ✓ 2. The NTCA is a statutory body under the Environment Ministry. Its constitution came through the 2006 amendment to the Wildlife (Protection) Act, 1972, which gave it legal backing.
  • ✓ 3. The NGRBA was set up in February 2009 under the Environment (Protection) Act, 1986. The Prime Minister was its ex-officio Chairperson.

Remember · AWBI is under the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. NTCA is statutory, backed by the 2006 amendment to the Wildlife Act. NGRBA (2009) was set up under the EPA, 1986, with the PM as chair.
